Barcelona is a city that breathes music from every corner, and sometimes, among the cobbled streets of the Gothic Quarter or in clubs with history, there are hidden sound gems that have not yet reached all the ears they deserve. This is the case of BEX, an emerging band with the sound of an established formation. Their intoxicating mix of soul, funk, rock and touches of jazz and R&B has the power to catch you instantly, and their stage proposal is one of those that leave a mark.
BEX was born in Barcelona, but its DNA is international: Rebecca Houlihan (Ireland) leads the group with an overwhelming voice; Bryan Curtis (Ireland) brings a forceful and dynamic drumming; Lorenzo Spinozzi (Italy) displays a guitar as technical as emotional, and Hernan Fridman (Argentina) completes the quartet with a deep and elegant bass groove. Together, they shape a band that, although still building its listener base, has the musical maturity of someone who has experienced a thousand stages.
In their recent interview, the members of BEX made it clear that they are not here to follow formulas, but to explore. They talk about influences ranging from Aretha Franklin to Led Zeppelin, passing through Erykah Badu and Jamiroquai. Their music is nourished by these references, but does not imitate: it reinvents itself with each song. His thing is live, and it shows. As Rebecca says in the video: “Our strength is on stage. We want each show to be an experience, something you take with you when you leave the venue”.
And that experience is exactly what they offer this Friday at Ocaña (Barcelona), one of the most emblematic spaces in the center. It will be a night of dance, improvisation, powerful voices and a lot of soul. And for those who want to see them cross borders, on August 22 they return to Cork, Ireland, in a show that promises to be as intimate as it is explosive: the kind of celebration that only happens when a band plays in what feels like home.
BEX is one of those bands that you have to see before they really take off. Because they have everything it takes: talent, chemistry, presence and, above all, something real to say with their music. If you like soul with body, funk with attitude and rock with class, you are late in discovering them.
Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
