From the shadows of obscurity to the international stage, Panchiko’s story is one of the most fascinating in British indie. Formed in Nottingham between 1997 and 1998 by Owain Davies, Andy Wright, Shaun Ferreday and a drummer known only as John, the band recorded their EP D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L in 2000, distributing just 30 copies. Years later, one of these copies was discovered in a thrift store and shared online, leading to a global search to identify its creators.
This rediscovery prompted Panchiko to reunite in 2020, adding Rob Harris and John Schofield to the lineup. Since then, they have released two studio albums: Failed at Math(s) in 2023 and Ginkgo in April 2025, consolidating their sound that fuses shoegaze, trip-hop and neo-psychedelia.
With a North American tour scheduled for 2025, including performances at festivals such as Pitchfork London, Panchiko demonstrates that her legacy goes beyond nostalgia, offering a fresh and relevant approach to today’s music scene.
