Lil Nas X, between bewilderment and concern, what really happened in Los Angeles?

By LoffMusic Editorial Staff – August 2025

Thursday morning in Los Angeles left us with a postcard as unusual as it was disturbing: Lil Nas X, one of the most disruptive artists in pop today, was stopped by the police while walking in his underwear and cowboy boots along Ventura Boulevard in Studio City. Witnesses claim they saw him disoriented, singing, and with a traffic cone on his head. A scene that could look like part of one of his music videos… if it weren’t for the fact that it ended with the artist hospitalized for a possible overdose episode and accused of assaulting a police officer.

No, it is not a marketing campaign.

A misunderstood performance or a cry for help?

Throughout his career, Montero Lamar Hill, better known as Lil Nas X, has turned provocation into art. From his first big hit Old Town Road to his iconic fictional pregnancy to promote Montero, he has been able to use absurdity as a language. But this time there’s no production crew, no planned aesthetic: there’s an ambulance, an arrest and a 25-year-old artist on a stretcher.

Los Angeles police reported that the artist was behaving erratically and charged at officers when they attempted to assist him. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was evaluated for a possible overdose. According to multiple U.S. media, the detainee was indeed Lil Nas X, although his team has not issued any official statement as of press time.

The pressure behind the fame, without filter

Just a few months ago, the artist himself confessed on social networks to having gone through a particularly hard year. He spoke of anxiety, isolation and “a loss of connection with himself”. In April, he worried his fans by appearing in a video from the hospital, mentioning a partial facial paralysis that many interpreted as another symptom of the emotional toll he is facing.

Is this episode a public meltdown? An overwrought response to the pressure of sustaining a persona that must always be bigger, more provocative, more viral?

Between empathy and spectacle

Public reaction has been, as always in times of social media, divided. There are those who mock, those who speculate with conspiracy theories (“it’s a teaser for her next album”), and those who ask for respect and empathy in the face of what seems to be an obvious case of mental health in crisis.

And no wonder. In an industry where exposure is permanent and authenticity becomes a commodity, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that behind the character is a person.

What’s next?

Lil Nas X remains hospitalized while authorities decide whether he will be formally charged. In the meantime, his fan base – loyal, loud and creative – has already begun filling the networks with messages of support. The hashtag #ProtectMontero is going strong, demanding understanding and reminding us that even superstars can break.

From LoffMusic, beyond the headline, we say it clear: hopefully this is the beginning of a new stage, more human, more honest, more careful. Because music needs his irreverence, yes, but above all, it needs him to be well.
