Madrid will host an unrepeatable meeting to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Camarón de la Isla’s birth
There are artists who succeed.
There are artists who mark an era.
And then there is Camarón de la Isla.
Because José Monje Cruz not only revolutionized flamenco. He transformed Spanish music forever.
His influence crosses generations, styles and borders. It is present in contemporary flamenco, pop, rock, jazz, urban music and in practically any artist who has understood music as a form of freedom.
For this reason, on the 75th anniversary of his birth, the Spanish music industry has decided to pay tribute to him.
And it won’t be just any concert.
It will be a historic event.
On December 1, 2026, the Movistar Arena in Madrid will host “Por Camarón – 75 Aniversario”, a unique show conceived as an unrepeatable celebration of the legacy of the cantaor from San Fernando.
One night only.
A unique opportunity.
And probably one of the most important musical events to be held in Spain during this decade.
Much more than a concert
Since its official presentation at the UMusic Hotel Teatro Albéniz in Madrid, it has been clear that “Por Camarón” is not intended to be a simple gathering of artists performing classics.
The proposal has been designed as a complete stage experience that will cover Camarón’s life, work and artistic revolution.
The show will be divided into three main acts:
The legacy
A journey through the artistic imprint he left on later generations.
The root
A return to the origins of flamenco and the influences that shaped his singing.
Revolution and legend
The moment when Camarón broke the rules and opened a new path for Spanish music.
Throughout the performance, Camarón’s own voice will be present through original recordings that will dialogue with the guest artists, generating an unprecedented emotional experience.
A poster at the height of a legend
Although the full line-up has not yet been revealed, the organization has confirmed the participation of almost thirty artists from different generations and musical styles.
They all share the same bond:
having grown up under the influence of Camarón.
The presentation was attended by key figures such as:
- Pablo Lopez
- Israel Fernandez
- Jorge Pardo
In addition, Alejandro Sanz wanted to join the tribute through an audiovisual message in which he defined Camarón as “the greatest artist of flamenco”.
This is no coincidence.
Because few figures have achieved something as extraordinary as he has:
become an absolute reference for artists who are completely different from each other.
From Paco de Lucía to Rosalía.
From Enrique Morente to C. Tangana.
From Tomatito to Alejandro Sanz.
They all drink, directly or indirectly, from a revolution that began more than half a century ago.
The man who changed the rules of flamenco
To speak of Camarón is to speak of one of the greatest turning points in the history of Spanish music.
Born in San Fernando (Cádiz) in 1950, he began singing when he was just a child.
But no one could have imagined then that this young man would end up transforming the language of flamenco forever.
Together with Paco de Lucía he made some of the most important recordings in the history of the genre.
And later, with albums such as “La Leyenda del Tiempo”, he opened a door that is still being explored today.
That work, initially misunderstood by the more orthodox sectors, would end up becoming one of the most influential albums ever published in Spain.
Not only did flamenco change.
It changed the way of understanding tradition.
A legacy that continues to grow
During the presentation of the event, Dolores Montoya “La Chispa”, Camarón’s widow, summed up perfectly what his figure represents today:
“If my husband was great alive, he’s even greater alive now.”
And it is hard to disagree.
Because rarely has an artist managed to maintain such a constant presence decades after his disappearance.
His music continues to be discovered generation after generation.
His records continue to be studied.
And his interpretations continue to be an obligatory reference for any cantaor.
As guitarist and producer Jorge Pardo pointed out during the event:
“Camarón was, above all, a free artist.”
Perhaps that is the best possible definition.
The year of Camarón
“Por Camarón – 75 Aniversario” is part of an extensive cultural program promoted on the occasion of the anniversary.
The commemoration is supported by:
- Cajasol Foundation
- Universal Music
- GTS
- San Fernando City Hall
- InfoJobs
- Movistar
- Radiolé
- El País
In addition, during the presentation it was also announced the creation of the future Camarón de la Isla Awards, which will take place in San Fernando and will seek to recognize excellence in the world of flamenco.
A night for history
It is difficult to find recent precedents for such a production in Spain.
It will not be a tour.
There will not be a second date.
It will not be repeated in other cities.
“Por Camarón” is born with the vocation of a unique event.
A meeting designed to remember why the figure of Camarón continues to be one of the great cultural pillars of our country.
And also to remember something we sometimes forget:
that its influence does not only belong to flamenco.
It belongs to all Spanish music.
LoffMusic’s opinion
There are tributes.
And there are events.
Everything points to the fact that “Por Camarón – 75 Aniversario” clearly belongs to the second category.
Because it is not only about celebrating the memory of an artist.
It is about understanding how a single voice was able to change the course of the music of an entire country.
And that happens very rarely in history.
On December 1, Madrid will not only celebrate an anniversary.
It will celebrate a legend.
