The new indie-pop phenomenon you’ll soon be talking about even if you haven’t heard of it yet
By LoffMusic Editorial Staff
At a time when alternative music seems to be torn between TikTokera overproduction and nineties nostalgia, along comes a skinny kid from New York who sings as if he has just broken and rebuilt himself at the same time. His name is
Because if one thing is clear in 2025, it’s that sensibility is once again a revolution, and Sombr embodies that new wave of artists who don’t need to shout to fill a room.
Sombr goes from the bedroom to the media spotlight
Shane Michael Boose was born in New York in 2005 and started out like many artists of his generation: producing intimate tunes from his bedroom, with a laptop and more questions than certainties. But today he is already treading ground where only those who generate real conversation can go.
In recent months, it has achieved:
- Debuting as a model in Vogue World 2025: Hollywood, modeling for Valentino under the direction of Alessandro Michele. Yes, that Valentino. Yes, that Vogue.
- Breaking a tooth in the middle of a concert in New York… for the third time. It’s not exaggeration or marketing: he literally confessed to the audience that he broke his tooth in the middle of the show and kept on performing. The level of commitment is clear.
- Announcing an intimate show at the mythical KOKO in London, with tickets sold out in a matter of hours. And yes, although there are no confirmed dates, Spain is sounding louder and louder in his team’s conversations.
All this puts it in a very particular place: it is visible, but not yet saturated. It is cool, but not yet mainstream. And therein lies its magic.
The sound: indie for broken hearts that also want to dance.
Sombr doesn’t write about idealized heartbreak: he writes about the uncomfortable part. The guilt. The self-deception. The shame. The coming home.
His music moves in a balance between confession and aesthetics. Clean guitars, vulnerable melodies, emotional crescendos that don’t need to shout. A mix of indie rock with alt-pop and a sensibility that drinks from both Jeff Buckley and Phoebe Bridgers.
Each song sounds like a memory that still hurts a little.
The key moment ……. when the bedroom became a stage.
His first big push came with “Back to Friends”, a track that has already started to filter into Spanish radio stations and playlists without anyone having put his face on the cover yet.
Then came “Undressed”, a global viral that maintains the rawness of her DIY start, and her debut album I Barely Know Her, released this year and celebrated by the international press.
And if it still doesn’t ring a bell, here’s a sneak preview: it will. The big media are already talking about it. Brands want it. Festivals are feeling him out.
Why should we care in Spain?
Because Sombr is that kind of artist that usually arrives months late around here, when he’s already too big to feel that we discovered him in time.
Because their music has the emotionality of the indie that marked a generation (yes, the one that filled halls with The 1975, Clairo, Phoebe Bridgers or Tamino), but with a language and aesthetics that connect with Generation Z.
Because it’s sounding out there like artists who end up headlining festivals in Barcelona or Madrid without us knowing how it happened.
Three songs to fall in love with Sombr
🎧 “Back to Friends ” – The melancholic hit disguised as an anthem
🎧 “Undressed ” – Pure vulnerability, ideal with headphones at midnight
🎧 “12 to 12 ” – Their more cinematic side, directed with a vision of the future.
What’s next?
As you read this, Sombr is already moving between the indie circuit and the global pop radar. Maybe his next step will be a more ambitious European tour; we may see him at a Primavera Sound or Mad Cool before we know it.
What is clear is that it has narrative, aesthetics, talent, fanbase and momentum. It is a matter of time.
And when that happens, remember that you read it here.
