🎥 Hip-hop, thriller and Kurosawa: Spike Lee’s new project has everything to be a phenomenon in theaters and on streaming.
Spike Lee returns to the big leagues with Highest 2 Lowest, a dark and magnetic thriller that reinvents Akira Kurosawa’s Japanese classic High and Low and transports it to the urban scene of today’s New York. But beware: this is not just another film. It’s the perfect cross between auteur cinema, the hip-hop universe and the purest moral tension, with a cast that shoots expectations through the roof.
🧨 Denzel, Rocky and Ice Spice: the cast you never knew you needed
Headlining the cast is the incombustible Denzel Washington, who plays David King, an influential music industry executive whose life is turned upside down after the kidnapping of his son. Alongside him, in an unexpected but magnetic turn, is A$AP Rocky as Yung Felony, a young rapper with a hidden link to the case. And, to everyone’s surprise, Ice Spice makes his big screen debut in an as-yet undisclosed role, but which is already being talked about on networks as “the start of a new urban movie star.”
Also featured are big names like Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson, and a cameo appearance by Michael Potts. A lineup that breathes New York from every pore.
📼 The teaser that rocked Instagram
The first teaser was released by surprise on May 5 via Spike Lee’s own Instagram account. The piece is a visual artifact: Denzel speaks gravely about the “highs and lows” of power, while the unmistakable winds of James Brown play. Images of helicopters, rainy streets, executive offices and hip-hop clubs follow one after the other in a tense, aesthetic and brutally realistic montage.
🎞️ Spike Lee + Kurosawa + Apple = 🔥
Produced by A24 and Apple Original Films, Highest 2 Lowest is both an homage to Japanese cinema and a contemporary cry about power, class and music. If High and Low was about morality in the shoe industry, here we talk about the weight of soul in the cutthroat music business.
For Lee, this is the opportunity to return to his more direct and political narrative, now with the power of hip-hop as a dramatic and aesthetic engine. And if that wasn’t enough, the project marks his fifth collaboration with Denzel Washington, after such gems as Malcolm X and Inside Man.

🎧 LoffMusic opines:
“Highest 2 Lowest is not just cinema, it’s culture. A thriller with the soul of the Bronx, the tension of Kurosawa and the beat of Harlem. Spike Lee continues to break new ground.”
A New York thriller with a Japanese soul, a hip-hop heart and an African-American voice? Highest 2 Lowest is not just a film: it is the reflection of an entire society under the lens of the bravest cinema.
