British virtual band Gorillaz has begun to generate buzz around unreleased music as it prepares to commemorate its 25th anniversary with a series of special activities in London.
House of Kong and four unique concerts
To celebrate the anniversary, Gorillaz has opened House of Kong, an exhibition at the Copper Box Arena that offers fans a glimpse into the ins and outs of their creative universe. In addition, the same venue will host four special concerts between late August and early September.
At these live shows, the band will perform their first three studio albums in their entirety: Gorillaz (August 29), Demon Days (August 30) and Plastic Beach (September 2). The fourth concert, scheduled for September 3, remains shrouded in mystery.
Possible new music releases
In an interview with Channel 4 News, Damon Albarn confirmed that the last of the concerts could include new material:
“In that sense, yes,” he replied, when asked if there would be unreleased music, as Jamie Hewlett joked with a cut-the-air gesture.
This is not the first time Albarn has talked about an upcoming album. In March he told Les Inrockuptibles that he was finalizing a new Gorillaz album, as well as an opera, and that both would arrive in 2025. Hewlett reinforced that idea on social media, commenting, “Yes, the new album is coming out this year.” More recently, Albarn stated that the work will include songs in four languages.
A journey through his career
The concerts will feature the full Gorillaz lineup and visual projections created by Hewlett, bringing back the immersive experience that has been a hallmark of the band since its inception.
His latest work, Cracker Island (2023), received critical acclaim, including a four-star in NME, which noted its consistency and relevance after more than two decades of career.
