Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne and Smino present “Tree”, an ode to cannabis with relaxed flow and self-directed direction

Summer already has its alternative anthem. Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne and Smino have teamed up to release “Tree,” a new single that pays homage to cannabis culture, amidst introspective bars, warm production and a music video directed by Chance himself. The track marks Chance’s official return after several previews of his upcoming project, the long-awaited Star Line Gallery album.

Released on July 3, 2025, “Tree” arrives as a breath of fresh air among the new proposals of American hip-hop. The music video – shot in a marijuana nursery and specialty store – captures the relaxed and contemplative atmosphere that emanates from the track: calm, community and green awareness.

🌿 More than a marijuana issue

Although the theme revolves around marijuana and its place in everyday life, “Tree” is not limited to recreational use. Seeping into its lyrics are references to emotional stability, the search for tranquility, and even motherhood as a refuge. “My momma used to always keep a lil’ bit of ‘dro,” sings Chance, in a verse that intertwines the personal with the political.

👑 Three styles, one vibe

Each artist brings his or her identity naturally:

  • Chance the Rapper delivers the most narrative and melodic verse, cementing his profile as a spiritual storyteller.
  • Lil Wayne, eternal lyrical chameleon, drops witty lines that smack of instant classic.
  • Smino, with his soul-funk cadence, balances the track with a laid-back tone that floats between rapping and singing.

🎥 Music video directed by Chance: botanical and urban aesthetics

The music video is directed by Chance himself, who once again assumes total control over his art, reaffirming his colorful and symbolic visual style. The action takes place among plants, dispensaries and soft lights, capturing the contemplative essence of the track.

🔄 Reunions and complicities

This is not the first time that these three names have coincided:

  • Chance and Lil Wayne signed one of the anthems of 2016 with “No Problem” and matched on DJ Khaled’s hit “I’m the One.”
  • Smino collaborated with Chance on “Eternal” (from The Big Day) and also on the unreleased “BET Uncut”.

“Tree” rekindles these complicities with a much more relaxed and atmospheric approach, typical of the mature path they are all going through in their careers.

✨ What’s next?

“Tree” could be the third preview of the Star Line Gallery album, a project that Chance has been announcing for years and that seems to be getting closer and closer. Meanwhile, Lil Wayne continues the promotional cycle for his recent Tha Carter VI, and Smino continues to solidify his status as one of the most unique voices in alternative R&B and neo-soul.
