Canadian band Arcade Fire is back and back with a bang. The group led by Win Butler and Régine Chassagne has just announced their long-awaited seventh studio album, entitled Pink Elephant, which will be released on May 9, 2025. As a preview, they have released the first single, “Year of the Snake”, an introspective and luminous alt-rock piece that is already available on all platforms.
🎧 Year of the Snake: the sound of a new era
The track “Year of the Snake” is a sample of Arcade Fire’s new sonic identity. With an enveloping production and contemplative lyric, Win and Régine sing in unison: “It’s the season of change, and if you feel strange, it’s probably good”, over a vibrant bass line and a warm, meditative atmosphere. This song ranks third on the album’s tracklist, and sets the stage for what promises to be an intense and spiritual sonic odyssey.
🐘 Pink Elephant: punk mysticism and emotional odyssey
Described by the band as a “cinematic, mystical, punk” journey, Pink Elephant was recorded at Good News Recording Studio in New Orleans – the same studio that Win and Régine built – and features 10 songs that explore themes such as the duality between light and dark, inner beauty and the perception of the self.
The title of the album alludes to the mental phenomenon of trying to repress a thought that, ironically, becomes impossible to ignore: “Don’t think of a pink elephant”. A perfect metaphor for a time when mental health, introspection and the desire for change are key themes.
