A Minecraft Movie, a soundtrack merging nostalgia and modernity

By LoffMusic

On April 4, 2025, A Minecraft Movie hit theaters, bringing Mojang’s iconic video game to the big screen. Beyond its success at the box office, the movie stands out for a soundtrack that balances the essence of the original game with new musical proposals.

🎼 Mark Mothersbaugh: The film’s sound architect

Composer Mark Mothersbaugh, known for his work on The Life Aquatic and Thor: Ragnarok, was in charge of the film’s original score. His approach combined electronic and orchestral elements, incorporating references to original compositions by C418 and Lena Raine, such as “Calm 1” and “Pigstep,” respectively. These pieces are integrated into key moments of the film, such as the opening credits and the “Nether’s Got Talent” scene.

🎤 Jack Black and the phenomenon of “Steve’s Lava Chicken”.

Actor and musician Jack Black, who plays Steve in the film, contributed several original songs. Most notably, “Steve’s Lava Chicken”, a 34-second piece that became a viral hit, reaching number 21 in the UK charts, the shortest song ever to do so.

Another notable song is “I Feel Alive”, written by Black with Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, featuring Dave Grohl on drums and Troy Van Leeuwen on guitar. This collaboration was released as a single prior to the film’s release.

🎶 Musical diversity in the soundtrack

The soundtrack also includes contributions from artists such as BENEE, Dayglow, Dirty Honey and Bret McKenzie, offering a variety of styles that complement the film’s narrative. In addition, an instrumental version of Depeche Mode’s “Just Can’t Get Enough,” performed by Jamieson Shaw, is featured.
