Two decades after his last album, Will Smith returns to music with a new album titled Based on a True Story, which will be released on March 28, 2025. This return marks a new chapter in the career of the actor and rapper, who has described the project as his most personal work to date.
After a period focused on his film career and several years in the eye of the media storm, Smith rediscovers his musical voice with an introspective album, where he explores themes of resilience, redemption and personal transformation.
An album with great collaborations
The new album will feature 14 tracks and will include collaborations with artists such as DJ Jazzy Jeff, Teyana Taylor and Jac Ross. In addition, the album includes a special collaboration with her son Jaden Smith on the track Work of Art, reinforcing the theme of personal growth and evolution that permeates the project.
The singles already released have shown different facets of this new phase of Will Smith:
🎵 First Love – A tribute to passion and beginnings in music.
🎵 Beautiful Scars – A reflection on the past and lessons learned.
🎵 TANTRUM – A more aggressive track, where Smith vents about fame and its challenges.
🎵 Work of Art – A collaboration with Jaden Smith, where both explore creativity and identity.
🎵 You Can Make It – An inspirational track with a message of perseverance.
An album born of introspection
In a recent interview, Will Smith talked about what prompted him to return to music after 20 years:
“It opened up a well inside me, a wellspring of understanding about art, pain and many other things I didn’t even know were there. After the Oscars, that spiritual exploration continued and awakened in me a need to share what I was experiencing.”
Smith has also hinted that Based on a True Story could be the first of three albums, which he described as “three seasons of a music series,” suggesting that his return to music will not be a simple experiment, but a new phase in his artistic career.
What can we expect from Based on a True Story?
This new Will Smith album does not seek to revive his 90’s hip-hop star facet, but shows an artist in constant evolution, willing to narrate his experiences from a mature and reflective point of view.
