Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy defies the darkness with “Twilight Override,” a triple album to light up the collapse

Jeff Tweedy has never been one to make unnecessary noise. But when he speaks – or, rather, when he writes songs – it’s impossible not to listen. The Wilco frontman has just announced Twilight Override, a triple album with 30 new songs that will be released on September 26th, and which already has four first previews available.

The project comes as a direct artistic response to the current times: uncertain, frenetic and deeply human. Tweedy does not offer answers, but he does offer sound refuges where to think, feel and breathe. And that, in 2025, is worth more than ever.

A work born from the abyss… and from the light.

Recorded at his studio The Loft, in Chicago, Twilight Override seems to be, in Tweedy’s own words, “a way to counteract the darkness.” In the press release that accompanied the album’s announcement, the musician wrote a phrase that resonates strongly these days, “Creativity eats darkness.”

It is no coincidence that the album is released in autumn, when the northern hemisphere begins to fade. And neither is it that he has decided to divide the work into three parts, as if they were chapters of the same quest. “It’s my attempt to increase the voltage of my own light,” he said.

A sound in family and community

The album features close collaborations: his sons, Spencer and Sammy Tweedy, are actively involved, as well as James Elkington, Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart, recurring names in the Chicago indie scene. It is a work that not only sounds intimate, but is also intimate in its construction.

The four tracks already available– “Enough,” “One Tiny Flower,” “Out in the Dark” and “Stray Cats in Spain” –offer a mix of introspective folk, twilight guitars and lyrics that oscillate between melancholy and lucidity. Songs that do not seek euphoria, but clarity.

International tour to embrace listeners

Tweedy also confirmed a world tour to present Twilight Override, which will begin in October in North America and continue in February in Europe. The tour includes stops in cities such as New York, Chicago, Toronto, Madrid, Barcelona, London and Paris. A gesture of physical presence in times where human connection is slowly beginning to regain value.

In times of algorithms, Tweedy bets on voice

From LoffMusic we couldn’t overlook this release. Because Twilight Override is not only a rarity because of its format (who releases 30 songs in one sitting these days?), but because it’s done by someone who has spent more than three decades writing records that feel like open letters.

It’s not an album made for quick lists or trendy TikToks. It’s a project that requires pausing, listening, and maybe a walk in the park in the fall. And if that sounds old-fashioned, it’s because the future probably has some of that: humanity, silence, beauty.

Jeff Tweedy doesn’t want to change the world. He just wants to light it up a little. And Twilight Override is his flashlight.
