Composer Hans Zimmer returns to the Dune universe with the soundtrack for Dune: The Second Part, a grandiose and expansive continuation of the more intimate and melancholic beginning of the first film. This change of tone allows Zimmer to weave a truly spectacular thematic tapestry, with the most outstanding addition: an absolutely captivating love theme for Paul and Chani.
A journey through the sound cosmos of Dune
1. An Unforgettable Main Theme:
The score begins with “Beginnings Are Such Delicate Times”, where the characteristic Arrakis drums resonate melancholically, evoking the atmosphere of the first film. However, the percussion gives way to soft woodwinds that introduce the main theme of Part Two. This motif, originally the beginning of the Atreides House theme in the first film, is reinvented as the driving force behind the love between Paul and Chani. The track resonates peacefully for the first half of the track, rising into a grandiose and beautiful crescendo in the last few minutes, with synthesizers and otherworldly electronics highlighting the romanticism of the track.
2. Atmospheres and Emotions:
“Eclipse” takes us into the mysticism of Dune with haunting vocals and strings that reprise the solemn motif of “Holy War” from the first film. The melancholic brass and foreboding future create a dark and ominous atmosphere.
“The Sietch” features Paul Atreides’ theme with commanding vocals and mystical winds, followed by Kwisatz Haderach‘s motif. The dense and rich atmosphere reflects the complexity of the world of Dune.
“Water Of Life” combines singing vocals and resonant percussion that builds in intensity to an almost deafening finish. ” A Time Of Quiet Between The Storms” offers a respite with the main and love theme in a serene and hopeful concert piece.
3. Fast-paced action:
“Harvester Attack” immerses you in the action with malevolent vocals, intense percussion and towering electronics. Paul’s theme bursts in at the end with screeching vocals in a triumphant victory.
“Worm Ride” and “Ornithopter Attack” keep up the frenetic pace with distorted electronics and pounding percussion. “Each Man Is A Little War” creates a haunting atmosphere with ambient and electronic sounds.
4. Tension and Victory:
“Resurrection” begins with the screams of Kwisatz Haderach and a melancholic atmosphere. The ominous future motif returns in deep, gravelly voices.
“Southern Messiah” ratchets up the tension with ground-shaking bass and haunting vocals. “The Emperor” creates an imposing atmosphere with high-pitched strings, vocals and an electronic crescendo.
“Worm Army” combines vibrating sand sound effects with bursts of drums. Paul’s theme returns with screeching action vocals.
5. A Sublime Ending:
“Kiss The Ring” begins quietly, but the atmosphere of Dune seeps in with romantic winds that play the main theme. An explosion of emphatic electronics breaks the softness, with vocals and bells accompanying a grandiose and epic main theme.
“Only I Will Remain” repeats the opening notes of the Atreides House and love themes, building to a crescendo that culminates with the motif of “Holy War” transformed into Paul’s victory theme.
“Lisan Al Gaib” begins with Kwisatz Haderach’s theme on electric guitar, followed by melancholic strings and Paul’s motif. The score ends with a mystical resonance of the main theme
The soundtrack of Dune: The Second Part is a masterpiece that expands the musical universe of the first film. The combination of memorable themes, evocative atmospheres and fast-paced action creates a unique and unforgettable listening experience.
