Ibiza, and a waiter at a beach bar to listen to exactly the same music.<\/p>\n\n “Song of the Summer” wasn’t just a label.<\/p>\n\n It was a common language.<\/p>\n\n But one day he disappeared.<\/p>\n\n And the funny thing is, we hardly even noticed.<\/p>\n\n Until relatively recently, discovering music was easy.<\/p>\n\n There were few entry points.<\/p>\n\n The radio.<\/p>\n\n Music television shows.<\/p>\n\n The compilations that came out every June.<\/p>\n\n The albums that played in the cars during the holidays.<\/p>\n\n The bars.<\/p>\n\n The town’s festivals.<\/p>\n\n It was a limited ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n That led to something extraordinary.<\/p>\n\n The entire country was listening to practically the same soundtrack.<\/p>\n\n If a song was a hit, it was a hit for everyone.<\/p>\n\n There were no bubbles.<\/p>\n\n There were no algorithms.<\/p>\n\n There were no personalized playlists.<\/p>\n\n Music was still a collective space.<\/p>\n\n Today, when we open Spotify, each user sees a different cover image.<\/p>\n\n TikTok suggests different songs depending on how we interact with the app.<\/p>\n\n Instagram makes a 15-second clip go viral.<\/p>\n\n YouTube recommends different videos even within the same household.<\/p>\n\n Apple Music.<\/p>\n\n Amazon Music.<\/p>\n\n Shazam.<\/p>\n\n Every platform listens for us even before we press the play button.<\/p>\n\n Before we knew it, we stopped sharing songs.<\/p>\n\n We started sharing algorithms.<\/p>\n\n And that’s when the summer hit began to fade away.<\/p>\n\n Maybe this summer you’ll be listening to Olivia Rodrigo nonstop.<\/p>\n\n Your best friend is featured on Justice’s new album.<\/p>\n\n Your brother is hooked on “Barry Can’t Swim.”<\/p>\n\n Your parents are still playing the Rolling Stones.<\/p>\n\n And under the umbrella next to us, someone is dancing to Bad Bunny’s latest hit.<\/p>\n\n The funny thing is that you’re all right.<\/p>\n\n Because everyone experiences summer differently.<\/p>\n\n We’ve never had so much freedom to listen to music.<\/p>\n\n We had never been so far apart musically.<\/p>\n\n There is another change that is even more significant.<\/p>\n\n Back then, a song could last an entire summer.<\/p>\n\n Even several years.<\/p>\n\n These days, many go viral right from the start…<\/p>\n\n …and they disappear two weeks later.<\/p>\n\n The algorithm needs constant updates.<\/p>\n\n It does not reward loyalty.<\/p>\n\n It rewards speed.<\/p>\n\n The consequence is obvious.<\/p>\n\n We’re seeing more and more viral songs.<\/p>\n\n And even fewer unforgettable songs.<\/p>\n\n There’s one detail that many people overlook.<\/p>\n\n Festivals no longer mean the same thing as Spotify playlists.<\/p>\n\n This summer, thousands of people have sung along to Barry Can’t Swim, Justice, FKA twigs, Turnstile, and Empire of the Sun.<\/p>\n\n However, many of those names barely appear on the most popular lists.<\/p>\n\n And with some of the biggest streaming hits, the exact opposite is true.<\/p>\n\n We experienced two completely different musical conversations.<\/p>\n\n The digital one.<\/p>\n\n And the in-person one.<\/p>\n\n For decades, the radio decided which songs would be hits.<\/p>\n\n Today, just join the conversation.<\/p>\n\n Radio stations no longer create hits.<\/p>\n\n They’re being chased.<\/p>\n\n TikTok is picking up speed.<\/p>\n\n Spotify confirms.<\/p>\n\n YouTube amplifies.<\/p>\n\n The radio comes later.<\/p>\n\n It is one of the biggest changes the music industry has seen since the advent of the MP3.<\/p>\n\n He has a lot of them.<\/p>\n\n Some people will remember this summer for Olivia Rodrigo’s “The Cure<\/strong>. “<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n Others because of the electronic sensation created by Justice and Ang\u00e8le<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n Many people won’t be able to stop listening to *Barry Can’t Swim<\/strong>*.<\/p>\n\n Pop music fans will be torn between Charli XCX and Lola Young.<\/p>\n\n Rock fans will celebrate the return of Editors or the Rolling Stones.<\/p>\n\n Meanwhile, Bad Bunny will continue to take Latin American beaches by storm, and DJs will fill Ibiza with Afro house, melodic techno, and organic electronic music.<\/p>\n\n Never before had a summer sounded so different depending on who was listening.<\/p>\n\n And maybe it won’t be necessary.<\/p>\n\n For years, we viewed music as a mass phenomenon.<\/p>\n\n Today, it serves as a reflection of our personality.<\/p>\n\n Listening to a song is no longer just about enjoying it.<\/p>\n\n It’s also a way of shaping who we are.<\/p>\n\n That explains why two people are vacationing together…<\/p>\n\n …and don’t share a single song.<\/p>\n\n We’ve lost those moments when everyone knew the same chorus.<\/p>\n\n Weddings.<\/p>\n\n Folk festivals.<\/p>\n\n Impromptu karaoke sessions.<\/p>\n\n The feeling of being part of a huge musical conversation.<\/p>\n\n That hardly exists anymore.<\/p>\n\n But we’ve also gained something wonderful.<\/p>\n\n Diversity.<\/p>\n\n It has never been easier to discover artists.<\/p>\n\n Never before had so many styles coexisted.<\/p>\n\n An independent band could never compete on equal footing with a global superstar.<\/p>\n\n Music no longer depends solely on a record label’s budget.<\/p>\n\n It depends, above all, on the ability to move people.<\/p>\n\n And that’s great news.<\/p>\n\n Perhaps the biggest mistake is to keep asking ourselves what the song of the summer will be.<\/p>\n\n The real question should be a different one.<\/p>\n\n What was your song of the summer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n Because it probably doesn’t match mine.<\/p>\n\n And that, far from being a problem, shows that we are living in the freest era in the history of music.<\/p>\n\n The “song of the summer” may be a thing of the past.<\/p>\n\n But in return, each of us has gained the opportunity to write our own soundtrack.<\/p>\n\n And perhaps that is the greatest musical revolution of the 21st century.<\/p>\n\n
