What do IDLES<\/strong>, Darren Aronofsky<\/strong> and a borrowed cat have in common? The answer lies in Caught Stealing<\/em>, the new film by the director of Requiem for a Dream<\/em>, which promises to take us back to the violent, chaotic and fascinating underworld of a New York in the nineties. And it does so with a ferocious soundtrack, composed by Joe Talbot<\/strong> and company. <\/p>\n\n

The first sound preview is “Rabbit Run,”<\/strong> a visceral barrage that sounds as if CBGB’s had reopened just for this release.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

\ud83c\udf9e\ufe0f A Crime, a Cat and Four Songs<\/h3>\n\n

The film, based on Charlie Huston<\/strong>‘s novel of the same name, follows Hank Thompson (Austin Butler), a former baseball player turned sleazy New York bar bartender, who gets caught in a criminal spiral after agreeing to take care of his punk neighbor’s cat. The cast is pure generational charisma: Zo\u00eb Kravitz<\/strong>, Bad Bunny<\/strong>, Regina King<\/strong>, Liev Schreiber<\/strong>, Matt Smith<\/strong>, Carol Kane<\/strong>… and yes, lots of leather, mayhem and destruction. <\/p>\n\n

To reflect that street pulse, Aronofsky didn’t want a traditional soundtrack<\/strong>. He wanted distortion, urgency, electricity. And he went straight for IDLES. <\/p>\n\n

\ud83e\udde8 IDLES: punk as a film score<\/h3>\n\n

“Rabbit Run,”<\/strong> one of the four original songs<\/strong> IDLES composed for the film, is built around the film’s central theme: facing fears head-on<\/strong>. The piece not only stands out for its raw power, but for how it conveys that sense of urgency and transformation. In turn, the band recorded the complete score<\/strong> for the film, composed by Rob Simonsen<\/strong>(The Whale<\/em>, Deadpool & Wolverine<\/em>), using IDLES’ own sound as a base: textures created with feedback, distortion, pedals and an incendiary attitude. <\/p>\n\n

The result is a hybrid between punk and film music that had never been attempted in this way before<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Joe Talbot, IDLES leader, explained:<\/p>\n\n

“This project came out of a chance meeting with Darren backstage at Fallon<\/em>. But over time I understood that working with one of my favorite directors was inevitable. His films have shaped me as an artist, and this experience has been like a lucid dream that I will live again and again with joy and humility.” <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

Simonsen added:<\/p>\n\n

“Working with IDLES as an orchestra was a very satisfying challenge. They are brilliant musicians, with clear looks, big hearts and brave souls. They have created a truly powerful soundtrack.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

Aronofsky sums it up best:<\/p>\n\n

“I don’t think a band has ever been commissioned to compose and perform a score like this for a film – and who better than IDLES to do it?”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

Caught Stealing<\/em> opens in theaters on August 29,<\/strong> and the digital soundtrack<\/strong> will be available the same day via Protozoa<\/strong>, with a pre-sale vinyl<\/strong> edition already active.<\/p>\n\n

In addition, IDLES is touring<\/strong> this summer with dates in Bristol (August 1 and 2)<\/strong> for their biggest shows to date, plus Riot Fest in Chicago<\/strong>, Shaky Knees in Atlanta<\/strong>, and opening for Deftones<\/strong> and My Chemical Romance<\/strong> in various cities.<\/p>\n\n
