Robbie Williams is back, and he’s back with his sights set on 1995. His new album, simply titled BRITPOP<\/em>, is not just an exercise in nostalgia: it is a statement of intent. It is the album that, in his own words, \u201cI always wanted to write and release after leaving Take That\u201d. <\/p>\n\n

And if that wasn’t promising enough, the first advance of the album, \u201cRocket\u201d, comes with the collaboration of a true rock legend: Tony Iommi<\/strong>, guitarist of Black Sabbath<\/strong>, in a song full of guitars, adrenaline and stadium attitude.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cIt’s a track full of huge guitars, as you can imagine. It’s pure, unfiltered adrenaline,\u201d Williams said of \u201cRocket.\u201d The music video premieres this Friday, May 23. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

\n\n

The record Robbie dreamed of in 1995<\/h3>\n\n

BRITPOP<\/em> will be Robbie’s first studio album in nearly a decade and, according to the artist himself, is a vibrant tribute to that \u201cgolden age of British music.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

“I’ve worked with some of my heroes on this record; it’s rawer, more guitar-driven and more energetic than usual. There’s some \u2018Brit\u2019 and a lot of \u2018pop\u2019. I’m immensely proud of the result.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

Musically, the album navigates between classic British rock, choral anthems with Oasis DNA, and the pop sensibility that has defined Williams since he embarked on his solo career. In other words: BRITPOP<\/em> is not a copy of the past, but a reunion between the Robbie he was and the artist he is today. <\/p>\n\n

\n\n

Tour, nostalgia and jabs at the Gallaghers<\/h3>\n\n

The BRITPOP Tour<\/em> kicks off on May 31 in Edinburgh<\/strong> and will tour stadiums in the UK, Ireland and Europe throughout the summer. And as if the context couldn’t be more symbolic, Robbie’s return coincides with the Oasis<\/strong> tour, or the closest thing to their reunion in decades. <\/p>\n\n

Robbie, known as much for his sharp tongue as for his charisma, has already commented on the matter:<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe show will be amazing, a healing moment for the country. Liam reading his cell phone in the toilet is more charismatic than 99.9% of the world’s population. And yes, Noel will be around too.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

The album cover also throws a nod to his 90s version: the iconic red tracksuit he wore at Glastonbury 1995, when he was seen partying with the Gallaghers in full Britpop euphoria. Two decades later, Robbie seems to want to close the circle, but in his own way. <\/p>\n\n
