Faithfull burst onto the music scene in 1964 with As Tears Go By, a song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, which quickly made her a star of the vibrant Swinging London scene. With her distinctive voice and a sweeping personality, she established herself as one of the most beloved artists of her generation.

Throughout her career, Marianne Faithfull not only shone in music, but also in film. Her role in The Girl On A Motorcycle (1968) made her an icon of the time, and her performance in Irina Palm (2007) earned her a nomination at the European Film Awards.

In music, Faithfull was an artist in constant evolution. After a first pop stage in the 60s, her 1979 album Broken English showed a darker and rawer side, influenced by her personal experiences. This work was critically acclaimed and is considered one of his best albums. Later, with albums such as Strange Weather (1987), she consolidated her reputation as a blues and jazz interpreter with a unique style.

Faithfull’s life was marked by success, but also by difficult times. Her relationship with Mick Jagger between 1966 and 1970 was widely documented and became one of the most iconic in the rock world. However, her struggle with addiction and her life on the streets of London during the 1970s were also part of her story. In her 1994 autobiography, Faithfull described those years as a search for anonymity after the maelstrom of fame.

Despite the difficulties, Faithfull always managed to reinvent herself. In 2006, she overcame breast cancer and continued to work in music until her later years. Her 2021 album, She Walks In Beauty, in collaboration with Warren Ellis, was a showcase of her love for poetry and her capacity for artistic innovation.

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood were among the first to pay tribute to Faithfull. Jagger remembered her as a “great friend, singer and actress,” while Richards shared a touching image of the two enjoying a moment together. Wood simply wrote: “Farewell, dear Marianne.”

Her legacy is immortalized in her vast discography, her contribution to film and her influence on generations of artists. Marianne Faithfull was more than a singer; she was a rebellious spirit, a storyteller and an unwavering icon of music.
